I love it, I love it not, I love it ...

I'm having a love-hate relationship with homeschooling right now. It may have something to do with having two 3yos, I don't know. Some days my very last shred of sanity is being threatened with extinction.

But today, I was reminded of one the reasons I love teaching my kids at home. Ruby and I had finished reading our Bible lesson from Genesis 18, and she was narrating the story to me. She did a great job telling the story of Abraham and Sarah being told they were going to have a baby. She couldn't believe Sarah laughed at God! And in a world that teaches kids to be afraid of every stranger, Ruby was fascinated that Abraham invited the three travelers into his tent to rest and eat. We ended up having the greatest discussion of hospitality and what God says about helping others -- even total strangers. This was part of our discussion ...

Ruby: Why did Abraham invite those guys to eat with him?
Me: God wants us to give to others. When people need something or they ask for help with something, He wants us to help meet their needs.
Ruby: Well, if someone needed a snack, I would give them all my candy. I can just buy some more.
Me: What if you couldn't buy any more?
Ruby: I think I'd still give it to them.

So we read the story of the widow giving her last few cents and what Jesus said about her offering. How could she give away her last two copper coins? How is that worth more than what the rich offered that day? God asks us to do all kinds of things that don't make sense in this world. But He cares more about our attitude about giving and our attitude about whose stuff this is than how much we actually give. And if we really believed what Jesus says in Matthew 6, maybe we'd be more quick to invite strangers over for dinner or share what we have with the needy.

I love that we started in Genesis and ended up in Matthew. I love that we started out talking about a guy named Abraham who lived thousands of years ago and ended up discussing hospitality, giving to others, and trusting God to provide everything we need. Today, I love homeschooling.
